Biomass flows in an agro-pastoral village in West-Africa: Who benefits from crop residue mulching?

چکیده
In West Africa, new management practices such as conservation agriculture with crop residue mulching can improve yields for individual farmers. However, in a context of complex social interactions between farmers, the introduction also lead to conflicts private interests and communal use resources, example free grazing residues. The objective this paper was assess ex-ante impacts practice on productivity village central Burkina Faso using an agent-based model, AMBAWA, that simulates flows biomass nutrients livestock systems at scale. model considers four types farmers were identified study site: subsistence-oriented market-oriented agro-pastoralists pastoralists. simulated increased cattle migration outside due scarcity during dry season proportions cropland under agriculture, decreasing manure availability Consequently, assumed direct yield increases soil moisture result did not compensate losses resulting from lesser amounts available. This effect felt most strongly by who own relatively large numbers (agro-pastoralists pastoralists). total maize production level depended more proportion cropping land available cattle, thus mulched, than possible per se. AMBAWA support discussion among stakeholders (farmers, traditional administrative authorities) are involved residues other order co-design effective arrangements their sustainable use.

Multi-Seasonal Nitrogen Recoveries from Crop Residue in Soil and Crop in a Temperate Agro-Ecosystem
In conservation tillage systems, at least 30% of the soil surface was covered by crop residues which generally contain significant amounts of nitrogen (N). However, little is known about the multi-seasonal recoveries of the N derived from these crop residues in soil-crop systems, notably in northeastern China. In a temperate agro-ecosystem, 15N-labeled maize residue was applied to field surface...
متن کاملCrop–livestock interactions in agricultural and pastoral systems in West Africa
Driven by population pressures on natural resources, peri-urban pastoralists in the Far North Province of Cameroon have recently intensified livestock production in their traditional pastoral system by feeding their cattle cottonseed cakes and other agricultural byproducts to cope with the disappearance of rangelands typically available through the dry season. Although the crop–livestock intera...

Biomass based energy generation is one of the major focus areas of renewable energy programs in India. The strength of India’s biomass resources mostly lies in the agricultural sector. A large quantity of crop residue biomass is generated in India. However, crop residue biomasses are distributed resources with variation in spatio-temporal availability and its characteristics. Competing uses of ...
